Even Paul Rudd isn’t exempt from a telling off from Marvel, which is what happened after an interview in 2015.
The Clueless actor was promoting his first Ant-Man film on a US talk show, but the 53-year-old told a hilarious story the MCU bosses would have rather he’d kept to himself.
Speaking recently on Dax Shephard’s Armchair Expert podcast, the Friends star recalled how explaining what Ant-Man was ‘seemed silly’ back in 2015 before everyone knew about it.
He explained that when he told his then eight-year-old son that he would be playing a superhero called Ant-Man in a Marvel film, the response wasn’t awe, but merely, ‘who? Ant-Man?’
‘And I go, “well, he shrinks down to the size of an ant” – and by the way, I’m laughing as I’m saying it,’ remembered Paul.
The actor’s son then replied: ‘I can’t wait to see how stupid that’ll be’.

‘But it was more in reference to me than the actual property of Ant-Man,’ clarified Paul, ‘He was like, “you’re gonna play a superhero?”.’
Paul told the podcast how he also told this story on the aforementioned talk show, to which the talk show host joked he was on an ‘anti-promotional’ tour.
To that, the star replied at the time: ‘My entire career I’m on an anti-promotional tour.’
Marvel were understandably a little miffed with Paul’s shoddy pitch of their new blockbuster, and he revealed to the podcasters how ‘afterwards, Marvel is like, “great, but hey… when you’re talking about it, maybe don’t s*** on it. Just until people learn what it is”.’

The This Is 40 actor then explained on the Armchair Expert podcast how he really hates self-promotion.
‘My inclination in everything is never to sell anything. If anything it’s always to submarine it,’ he confessed.
‘And maybe that’s one of the reasons I don’t like doing press or anything. It’s like, “tell us about your new project”, and no matter what “my new project” is, I always think, like, “why the f*** do you guys want to talk about this? I don’t wanna talk about this”.’
He continued: ‘There’s always the questions like, “what do you hope audiences take away?”, and I’m like, “I don’t know!” I’d rather talk about what you’re up to, or something completely separate from anything.’
But Marvel obviously didn’t mind too much, as the actor is currently, er, promoting his fifth MCU film, Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania, which has just hit UK box offices.
(You’re welcome, Paul).
This comes after Radio 1 listeners were delighted Paul received a prank call on air from close friend and fellow acting royalty Olivia Coleman.
